Follow the team at http://baffinisland2010.wordpress.com In August 2010 a team of 9 will depart on a 4 week self organised research expedition to the Auyuittuq National Park, Baffin Island, Arctic Canada. Ironically, ‘Auyuittuq’ is Inuktituk for “the land that never melts”. However climate change is having a significant impact on our polar regions. .
Expedition Aims:1) To study the affect of climate change on the Inuit People, wildlife and landscape.2) To make a series of resources that will be freely availably for use in primary and secondary schools on our return.
What will we do there?
The team will live with an Inuit family for a week in a small community called Qikitarjuaq (population: 473) on an island just off the east coast of Baffin Island. Here they will study the culture of the Inuit people.
The team will take a "ferry" from Qik to the mainland east coast of Baffin Island. From here they will carry their packs weighing about 23kg into the Auquittuq National Park and set up base camp. Several trips will need to be made to transport by foot all equipment and food (about 15kg each of food).
The team will walk the 160km through that National Park to Pangnirtung carrying out various research projects en route, and will spend some time on the Penny Ice Cap.
Who will the expedition benefit?

It's unrealistic to spend every lesson outdoors...
If I can't take the children out of the classroom and into the outdoors, i'll take the outdoors into the classroom.
I relish the opportunity to explore this arctic landscape and learn more about it’s native people and develop resources to teach the next generation. It is through educating the next generation about climate change that we will help them to understand the world around them and how to live in a more sustainable manner.
Support us!
This expedition takes us to a remote wilderness where there is no rescue service. The success of the expedition relies on thorough planning, preparation and support. Expeditions build strength of character; and a determination to pursue a common goal. Successful people pursue their dreams, no matter what obstacles they encounter
If you would like to sponsor this expedition, to receive a talk from a team member or to find out more: Email Katie on Katie.harris86@yahoo.com or check out our website at http://baffinisland.moonfruit.com I promised 25% of money raised through fundraising to Claire House Children's Hospice.
